Is this the answer?....Solaris Beta Previews Battle With Win 2000 (11/02/99, 7:03 p.m. ET) By Stuart Glascock, TechWeb A day after Microsoft detailed pricing for Windows 2000, rival operating systems developer Sun Microsystems shot back on Tuesday with an inexpensive promotional preview program for Solaris 8. For $20, Sun's Early Access Program lets users preview Sun's high-end Unix system. Included in the package are beta software, a license, documentation, and other tools. Available for Sparc and Intel systems, Solaris 8 will ship in February, the same month Win 2000 is scheduled to hit store shelves. While Microsoft is aggressively targeting top-tier enterprise customers with its Advanced Server and Datacenter server editions, Sun is saying its high-end Unix system is superior. "We believe Solaris software is years ahead of Windows and other Unix systems," said Anil Gadre, Sun's general manager, Solaris software. Microsoft said it hopes to conquer Sun Solaris with Windows 2000 Advanced Server, which targets business-critical applications and e-commerce sites, and with its Datacenter version, which is due 90 to 120 days after the other versions. On Monday, the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant detailed pricing for its long-awaited OSes. Windows 2000 Server, for departmental and workgroup applications, is priced at $1,199 including a 10-user access license. Palo Alto, Calif.-based Sun immediately launched the next salvo in battle of OS giants. Sun opened up its beta-testing preview, touting Solaris 8 as supporting Java 2SE for building Web-centric software applications, the Java Media Framework for streaming media, X-server video enhancements, synchronization for PDAs, and Networked Real Time Processing. Sun also launched a broadside at the application upgrades required by Win 2000, saying existing Solaris applications are already compatible with Solaris 8 software. Sun's certification tool, AppCert, also helps assure compatibility. ======================================================== Now should I replace my working Windows NT machine....I think I will wait for the next release from Sunw.
