Steven Re <<I'm looking at the Athlon 700 and the Pentium 733. Any suggestions from anyone as to what processor would serve me best. Or should I just wait. I use my computer solely for direct access trading purposes, using a cable modem.>>

Your PII 300 is more than adequate. I am fairly certain you will get no advantage from a faster processor if you are only using it to trade online.

I love my Athlon 650 and it is extremely stable and fast, but I do use it for applications which utilizes the CPU power.

Re: what processor would serve me best...

Your applications sound like they're primarily integer (though I am not familiar with any PC configurations that display on 4 monitors,).

So, I would expect the perceived performance of those two systems would be identical if both had the same configuration (amount of memory, class of hard drive, etc.)

If this system uses a lot of DMA, the point to point EV6 bus of the Athlon might be a better choice. Given that much of the work being done is streaming data for display, Rambus 800 (if you can find and afford it) might give it the edge over the PC100 used by present Athlons.

But, in general, the performance of a Coppermine 733 and Athlon 700 should be very similar.

If you wait 3 months, you'll be able to get a faster system. 3 more months, and it'll be even faster, etc.

I'd avoid a system using one of the slow versions of Rambus, especially "PC600", it would cost more and perform worse than the Rambus 800 or PC100.

Dan
