Mattel forms genealogy venture
Mattel Inc. (MAT: news, msgs) said it will use software technology for researching your ancestry acquired as part its purchase of The Learning Co. to launch a Web-based joint venture Genealogy.com. Partner investors include A&E Television Networks, Hearst Interactive Media, Thomas H. Lee Partners and Weston Presidio Capital. "Genealogy is one of the leading subjects on the Internet," said Genealogy.com chief executive Rob Armstrong, adding that millions of people visit such sites monthly. The company currently produces a subscription Web site genealogylibrary.com. A&E Television Networks said its investment will include a televised promotion to educate viewers on the benefits of using the Internet to explore family heritage.

Barnes & Noble backs online vanity publisher
Barnes & Noble (BKS: news, msgs) said it acquired a 49 percent ownership interest in IUniverse.com, a Web-based publishing portal that will publish authors' works for $99. "This investment is about giving authors with small voices the loudspeakers they need to get their works published and distributed throughout the world," said Steve Riggio, vice chairman of Barnes & Noble Inc. "We're providing IUniverse.com with the marketing power to become one of the largest publishers in the world -- overnight." In about three weeks, more than 500 Barnes & Noble stores will feature in-store displays, and books from IUniverse.com.
