I think the future is split between manufacturers and mobile operators with best mobile data plans. If there was one (1) study showing GSM market share decline going towards 2004, I would jump ship. But there isn't. Every projection shows GSM increasing its market share among global subscribers during the next five years.

So in the sense of what will happen in 2006, GSM is history. But the markets haven't even recognized the GSM momentum in 2001 - let alone 2002 or 2003. Starting to bet on third generation winners *now* means that you have to wait for five years - and missing the real second generation revolution, which is only now starting. How many investors really want to live six years in the future? Lots will happen before we get there.
