James, do you have a link to the patent, itself? The patent will often contain sketches which are helpful in discerning the true differences between similar models (which I suspect is the case here comparing your case against others in a generic sense, in the wavelength management arena), more easily than reading the patentese, alone. I've been looking at this. It appears to be an implementation of their management system. Simply put, optical components send management/status/control information to each other through a dedicated lambda. (Out of band management...sort of.) Presumably, this system would be used to reroute in case of a fiber cut. It doesn't sound particularly novel, but maybe this is how everybody does this.
