I don't know what Toys R Us agreed to paid AOL to display their ad/links, but usually it is a lot of money and then the contracts are never renewed because the retailer never saw the expected returns.

I don't know really. I used to own a small business and I know that you have to beat people over the heads with advertising to get them to notice you when you are a start up. Toys-R-Us is building a 500 thousand square foot state of the art distribution center to handle the Internet business. They have the name recognition. I think one problem E-commerce faces is the fact that they are invisible. A brick and mortor store advertises by nature of the fact that it exists.
The other problem I had with the business was trying to re-train the customers to order from me. People are very habit oriented. I had a business that was generally driven by coupons. I advertised the same prices in both a coupon format and a menu sort of format and it was only the coupon format that brought the business in.
Its about finding the button that determines when the consumer buys and getting your name in front of him when that stimulus is present.
I read that it is kids that will more often than not determine where a family goes to eat. I think if ETYS teams up with businesses where kids already go and for which they decided that was where they wanted to be and they make a presence they will get somewhere. My kids want to go to McDonalds for the toys in the happy meals. I hate McDonalds but I sure eat there a lot.
I also think that if ETYS could have there own hit from a toy that was developed and sold by them they would be in great shape. Thats kind of a no brainer.... but its not just from the revenue derived from the toy its about changing buying habits and making ETYS the first thing that pops into our heads when we think of toys.

eToys does have a deal with AOL. AOL will deal with anyone and everyone. I think being tied to AOL is overrated. BN.com has been tied with AOL from the beginning and Amazon still blew them away.

BabyCenter, which maintains a separate Web site, will also be featured on Shop@AOL, Shop@CompuServe and Shop@Netscape, and will provide editorial content on AOL's Health Channel."
