Shareholders in Internet startups may differ with you as to whether they have been rewarded amply or not. Yes, they didn't get dividends, but ... :-)

In any case, now it is the public that is acting like venture capitalists (who, I hear, usually have excellent golf games from long hours of practice, I wonder where they get the time to practice so much). Dividends are to be paid when a company feels that its growth prospects are limited. And the Internet is just starting.

There are glitches in the present technology, of course. Those have to be fixed, and people are working on fixing them. Perhaps it is a good time to invest in the companies involved in such efforts?
