I agree with you this teacher keeping 600K should not be treated as outright theft.

First of all, I doubt the integrity of an organization that "loses" 600K in a clerical error.

And there are technically similar situtations that arise every day with these online brokers... where balances are messed up etc. and clients spend money they don't have. In these cases the brokers are taking the bulk of the financial hit (I agree with this), therefore this teacher should not receive harsher punishment.
