It also looks like the FBI has taken over the investigation, otherwise the Sheriff should have had a press briefing by now and I don't see one. This would also indicate that this is a Federal Crime investigation, which would indicate the authorities don't think it was a disgruntled stockholder, either.

Did he say who was visiting during the hypothetical call?

If he didn't want Conkling and X present during the meeting, it seems possible he didn't want to tell them who the visitor was, either.
