NEW YORK--The Nasdaq Composite Index rose for a fifth day, topping the 3,000 mark for a second day and setting an intraday record
at 3,032.97.

Since its recent low October 15, the index has gained 8.6 percent. In midday trading, the Nasdaq was up 49.26 at 3,030.89.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 22.94 to 10,604.76, and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 8.52 to 1,356.26. The CNET
Tech Index added 25.56 to reach 2,284.79, and 14 stocks rose for every 13 that fell on the New York Stock
Exchange.

Qualcomm jumped 20.5 to 245.31, leading the Nasdaq's gain, after reporting that fiscal fourth-quarter
profit almost quadrupled. The telecommunications-equipment maker's royalties are increasing because
of the acceptance of its wireless technology as a standard, analysts said.

Qualcomm also announced a 4-for-1 stock split. The stock is up 850 percent this year to date, making it
the best performer in the S&P 500. The nearest contender is LSI Logic, with a 260 percent gain.

"The whole mobile sector has a long way to go," said Trish Bridson of Newton Investment Management
.
