I'm here in DC at the NGN conference and let me tell you optical networks is the hottest topic here. Amazing to sit in a room with over a thousand people and listen to speakers like Lucent's Gerald Butters and representatives from Nortel, Ciena, Cisco, and Alcatel, all giving similar statistics on the growth of fiber networks. If you didn't know about photonics before arriving, you did after the first day here.

I'm not at all surprised the components stocks are running.

Pat

Perhaps the engineers on the thread can explain how this will impact SDL:

Alcatel's TeraLight Optical Fiber Cable Demonstrates 50 GHz Compatibility for DWDM Applications
11/19/99 France-based Alcatel's new TeraLight optical fiber cables have demonstrated transmission to 1.5 Terabits/s in recent DWDM system tests. Alcatel transmitted 150 channels of 10 Gbps with 50 GHz spacings over the C & L bands within a 400-km link. The test confirms the upgradeability of TeraLight optical cable products in deployment configurations when 50 GHz DWDM spacings become commercially available.

The results demonstrate that TeraLight can easily grow from 40 to 80 channel operation within the C band alone without having to expand into the L band as with NZ-DSF designs. L-Band expansion can be costly and more complex with the addition of new equipment such as amplifiers. In addition, TeraLight also supports the L and S bands when needed for expansion.

Alcatel's newly developed cable products containing TeraLight optical fiber have been specifically designed for high bit rate systems and close DWDM channel spacings. By optimizing effective area, dispersion, and dispersion slope, TeraLight will future proof network applications by providing superior 40 Gbps performance and permitting 50 GHz, 10 Gbps channel spacing in the C and L bands. This provides greater than 1.6 Terabits/s of capability using 10 Gbps systems. In addition, TeraLight has been designed to be compatible with operation in the S band (1440nm to 1550nm).

Optical cables using TeraLight fibers will be available later this year.
