The first head shot was the temple shot... the rest of the head shots were "insurance."

My theory:

I'm thinking that there was only one killer and therefore only one gun. The killer shoots Lehmann in the leg, and he can't go anywhere. He points the gun at Chalem, asks him or tells him something and then shoot him in the chest.
He walks over and pumps a few more rounds into Chalem's head and neck. Then the killer presses the gun to the temple of Lehmann and ends his life. The weapon used was a 9mm.

I apologize for the graphic detail and I'm not trying to offend the dead or their famileis, but I'm just offering up a possible scenerio. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it <ggg>

Unless the killer was really insane, . . .

Unless?

In the absence of other info a smaller caliber weapon is more likely. Greater precision is required for smaller calibers and a temple shot certainly represents greater precision. But why not Lehmann too? Was he already clearly dead? Had he predeceased Chalem by enough that he was undoubtedly not going to ever be able to bear witness? Was Lehmann's death used as an example to coerce Chalem to talk about something, or maybe as a means for Chalem's tormentor to subject him to a final horror before death. So a final head shot may be in order if there was no longer any reason to remain. Nor any desire to linger.

It occurred to me why the phones may have been shot. The killer was present with his victims when Alan Conkling was attempting to call in. A bullet to the phone would certainly settle any possibility of a desperate plea for help.
