It is a combination of events that has to do with either resistance levels or news.

In the first case, these levels are stock prices where there are many buyers or sellers depending on which way is the trend. At some point in time, the group making up the resistance is done and the stock start to move.

Of course, these breakouts usually occurs on day of higher volumes... but not always. The higher volume are often generated by the single fact that the resistance has been broken. Some day traders or full time investors notice these events and act on it.. (E.G. I added to my position after the stock broke decisively above $1.80)

It is also possible that another event cause more buyers to come to the market... (like an update report or new research report) ... I don't know if this is the case today...
