Ah, red maples are the best. We have a lot on the land in Alabama. And sweetgums. Those are cool. There will soon be another red maple here. A friend bought a house recently and planted a maple in front. "It's red, isn't it?" I ask, fully expecting her to uproot it and plant a different one if it wasn't. But she'd done the right thing. There is hope.

III have red maples in my back yard. Several. And the trees that I don't know the name of yet have received a reprieve because their foliage is turning purple. The wooded back part of the lot is golden, orange, red, and purple, and the leaves that have fallen on the thick new green turf make it look like a tapestry. In the daytime, I leave all the curtains open on the back windows, so I don't miss anything. It glows.
