re: I keep looking up the symbol ASAP

This one's a toughie, the hardest one to date...

Hi August, strange you should ask. The same question occurred to me the first time I came across this forum, too. But my folks taught me to never look a gift horse in the mouth. Or, was it, never check the teeth of a horse that has been given to you by a wealthy landowner. One of those two, I forget.

It must have been a typo on the part of SI, or a line problem caused by 60 cycle ingress noise close to my home. That's what it was, it was a noise problem, most likely, causing my data to get garbled.

I had typed in: Frank Coluccio Technology Forum - STAT!, and sent it to SI via cable modem. But due to the high noise levels I've been experiencing lately (although, I'm only surmising here), something must have happened to it en route. To wit, it came out on the actual board reading, "ASAP," instead.

Ordinarily, forward error correction would cover the problem, or the packet would get resent, or some such reasonable handling of the situation. In this case, however, the guy who writes the error correction code for the system that I use must have been up to some form of mischievousness, on that day.

Who?

ps - see my PM

August, I trust that you accepted my previous message in good form. It actually was intended in good fun. Not at you, to be sure. Instead, it was intended as a form of curious --if not deservedly perverse-- "thank you note," to the true originator of this thread, who I now see has removed his name from the banner page, leaving me to become suspect, even in this explanation, once again.

Let me try to answer your question again, this time with the real scoop. And the real scoop is... and in case there are any other lurkers out there who are also wondering:

ASAP is the name of the Forbes Magazine technology supplement which usually features George Gilder, author of the Telecosm, which has up until now been a series of articles, and slated to be the title of his upcoming book.

George has written and lectured on an endless number of topics in many different disciplines, most notably from my perspective on subjects that are now hot, but were not so hot when he first wrote about them, starting some years ago. And that says a lot.

George is also a participating member of SI, and in whose name also exists a thread, which is titled:

George Gilder - Forbes ASAP
Subject 16530

I sent Mr. Gilder a PM about a week ago and asked him to join us here when he saw a suitable opening. I'm just happy to be able to say that I got to your question first, before he did. -g-
