When Einstein wrote that, he had no idea what people in the future would consider to be "consumption goods necessary to life." Microwaves, color TVs, computers, 4,000 sq. foot houses, the list seems to keep expanding. If we all made do with what people in 1934 considered necessities, I agree, there would be a lot of unemployment, and we would all learn to play enstrumens, and devote much more time to kissing.
