Well - I think that buying decisions hinge on much more than just list price and specs. Accessory situation is important, no matter how frivolous it sounds. Nokia got a wide range of good belt-clips, car accesories, etc. out while many competitors couldn't offer much back-up stuff for their models.

6185 may not jump out of the page - but it has the built-in demand coming from the succesful 6190 and 6160 campaigns. You have to have a hell of a CDMA phone to battle competition that can leverage the AT&T, BellSouth and Pacific Bell advertizing. It seems likely that 6185 is already among top three Sprint sellers.

Besides - the "squeaky plastic" syndrome is afflicting many models that look good on paper. Some of the Samsung models creak when you squeeze them, which is a good way to build a trailer trash product image for your brand. Nokia nailed that solid, compact feel in the 1998 line-up. I just hope they handle the 8800 CDMA launch well, I'm not sure how good the AMPS performance is.
