Jim -
DELL's regrouping has nothing to do with CPQ's high end strategy. Your constant attempts to make my discussion of DELL directions somehow relate to CPQ only diminish your own credibility.

If I were to discuss CPQ's high end strategy, I would point out that the history of the computer business shows that you can't buy market share, and CPQ's acquisition of DEC is no exception. CPQ's high end strategy is certainly in much more disarray than DELL's. DELL only needs to execute, CPQ has to prune back an overgrown product line and resolve a number of serious conflicts with existing positioning before they can build a strong strategy.

But if you want to believe that my comments about DELL are motivated by some perverse need to slam my largest investment (DELL) in favor of my biggest loser (CPQ) go ahead... I think you would contribute more by addressing some of the issues I raise rather than attempting to shoot the messenger.

BTW: Solaris may well run on a PowerEdge 8500.

It does for sure, I have done some work on such a system.

But Solaris for X86 is in the same league as SCO - it's a stepchild. Only 1 in 4 solaris apps runs on the X86 version. The RISC version is big-endian, the X86 version is little-endian, so data can not be shared. The administration models are different.

Just because it has the same name doesn't make it the same OS... There is virtually no use of X86 solaris in the datacenter.

Dell will in due time scale the proprietary technological barriers and commoditize the complete high end server market. Sun is facing an inflection point in their markets as a software and hardware maker as Apple did when they did battle with Intc and Msft. It is wishful thinking on Sun supporters' part to think that the day won't come. I would expect Sun to try to partner with Dell.
Cheers
Mike
