Taiwan's Digital Camera Manufacturers Accelerate High-End Production November 4, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan's digital camera manufacturers are accelerating production of high-end products as offshore demand stiffens. An industry observer said Taiwan's digital camera exports have been increasing at a pace of several times a year since 1997, and this trend is true for high-end as well as low-end products. Manufacturers are also ramping up patterns of million pixels, closing the gap between themselves and Japanese manufacturers. The increase in sales by domestic producers is resulting in the leveling off of sales by Japanese producers. However, the lack of key components is keeping domestic competitors in a less competitive stance, and observers expect it will take two to three years for them to catch up with their Japanese counterparts. With a history of only three to four years, Taiwan's digital camera industry is growing at a faster pace than expected, as market demand accelerates. Total industry output is expected to hit 550,000 units this year, or 10 percent of global demand, and is predicted to reach as high as one million units next year. By 2002, Taiwan's total output could be as high as 26 percent of global demand. Already, Taiwan boasts more than 10 digital camera manufacturers. Production has been upgraded from the original 350,000 to 800,000 pixels, and some manufacturers are even turning out products of more than one million pixels. Two producers which have succeeded in achieving this upgrade are Opto Electronic System Co., Ltd. (OES) and Sampo Technology Corp. OES launched its 1.5 million pixel product in July. Nevertheless, it is still well behind the two million pixels Japan has developed. A OES spokesman said Taiwan's information industry has laid down a good foundation for the digital camera industry, specifically in the area of image processing, and it will surely catch up with Japan in two to three years.
