Hey, I used to work two $h!t jobs just to pay for a college class here and there. It wasn't easy, and having worked at a grocery store during the day and a gas station 3rd shift, I can easily say neither of those were even close to what I wanted, but it was what I could get at the time. There's no excuse for crime in my book.
I agree, education is the key, but we can't be lenient on crime either. If not prison time, at least serious restitution should be made to the victims. A slap on the wrist and some community service isn't going to ease the loss of any victim, violent or not.

<<Literacy works. There have been studies on that. And job training works.>> I dispute these studies. We cannot overlook the fact that within prison populations [or others] those that seek education are not comparable to a "control" group who do not seek to improve themselves. These individuals may well have abandoned a criminal lifestyle on their own.Apples and oranges here. These researchers IMO have a vested interest in the out come of these studies. A more reasonable approach would be to force a random selection of offenders to participate ....Although not practical.
<<Clever
uneducated people don't want to work at Mc Donald's.>> I believe you overestimate the importance of education. Clever people will always do well. But this isn't the point. My experience with criminals was that many [not all] didn't wish to work. Those that took my tools were obviously in the construction business they were working. There should be work for the not so clever and there is.McDonalds is the fate for some whether they want it or not is not the question. We have all at times worked jobs that we didn't want to. Stealing for a living never crossed my mind even then.
