Richard, ECC stands for "Error Correction Code." Basically, for every 64 bits of data, you add another 8 bits of ECC as a checksum. The ECC bits are encoded in such a way that 1-bit errors can be automatically corrected, and 2-bit errors can be detected, but not corrected. That's why ECC SDRAM increases the data path from 64 to 72 bits, while ECC RDRAM increases the data path from 16 to 18 bits.
