Date of record is important. Shares bought after the day of record, and before the actual split date, do not participate in the split !!

That is not true.

Even if you buy them 5 minutes before close of the day on which they split, you get the split. This is why you often see a run up just prior to a split.
If it was true, then shares would halve in price between day of record and split date, which obviously doesnt happen.
