The Dallas Opera is doing the Ring Cycle- one a year-- each season for four years. LAst year was Das Rheingold, next month we see Die Walkure. I took Ammo last year (Dan was out of town) and he adored it. Wagner is now his favorite composer and he begged for his own season ticket this year, which we got for him; who could say no to a 16 year old boy wanting an OPERA ticket? Unfortunately we're missing the first production this week becuase he opens in Meet Me in St Louis on Sat. Kiss 250.oo goodbye. And Titus Andronicus. Which I've never seen, although I understand it's not really great Mozart.
But anyway-- Wagner must appeal to the strong hormonal surging of an adolescent's pulse. He's so out of control- maybe he offends the more "civilized" of us?

I love the Requiem too.

Ohhh, my wife doesn't actually diss Wagner (she knows better -- <grin>), she just has a tendency to find a bush to prune when I rev up Gotterdammerung or Meistersinger. If I'm on a Wagner kick for a week or two all the bushes begin to look positively skeletal.

There's a guy across the street who is an aficionado, and we had them over for dinner once. He and I sat in the living room after two too many Chardonnays and cranked up Rheingold (I have the Solti Ring). I am still in the process of being forgiven for that one. We are going over to their place for dinner weekend after next, and I am flummoxed to find my Ring is nowhere to be found...
