I agree that eventually memory gets soldered to the motherboard, and have posted to that effect many times. Actually, I think that DRAM gets put on an MCM with the CPU, at least for consumer PCs. I think that is an item in Rambus' favor, as the RIMM is a nasty technology.

Cost is the only major issue facing RDRAM being successful. PC800 RDRAM retail is at least $10 per meg. NOW That is only issue I will focus on. I rather have 10 times the unit volume at 1/2 the price vs niche market for RDRAM.
