It all depends on where in CA. Here in the Bay Area, $96k per annum is middle class - and probably smack in the middle of middle class. Basically you better had bought your house eight years ago, cuz that kinda income is good for a "starter home" now. In our neighborhood - not nice, not bad - houses with one bathroom and 1200 sq ft of floor space are pushing at the half-million mark.
Now in rural CA, $9600 a year is pretty comfy. There are parts of the state where you can buy a 3-and-2 home for under $100k.

Good point about the folk hero thing. "Stick it to the man" still draws a crowd.
