In the near term thin client would have to establish a presence in these markets before declaring war on Wintel:

1. Phone like appliance: between PC's/laptops and handhelds.
- surf + email + calendar + todo ...
- problem is there really a market between the two or will people either spend more/less to get a PC/handheld ?

2. 3270/dumb terminal replacement/Vertical Apps/In-house Apps
- ie. airline ticketing, kiosks, specialized applications (ie. warehouse management terminal)

I see the greatest promise in #2 because it's the first step to proving thin client commercially; phase 2 of this being a true thin desktop. #1 is wrought with competition - quite frankly I'd rather have a PC + a Windows CE/Palm handheld portable rather than a Sun Ray.

As Twister said, Windows is a moving target that is evolving all the time. Also to make things more difficult Windows is entrenched as a personal and corporate desktop:

1. thousands of hardware/software vendors
2. thousands of companies have developed in-house applications for it.
3. It's the best & most popular desktop paradigm - by selecting it I can exchange information with other people more readily.
4. It's a known paradigm.

Cheers
James
