Fourth eBay outage in five days

eBay suffered its fourth outage in five days today, with numerous users reporting difficulties accessing the site.
As of this time the site appears to be completely inaccessible. However, eBay spokesman Kevin Pursglove said the site appeared to be up and running, and the bidding functions seemed to be working. Pursglove did say that the company was having problems displaying images on its site.

"It's the graphic functions that do not work, but all other functions should be accessible," he said.

The outage appeared to start around 3:30 p.m. PT, when eBay users on the AuctionWatch message boards reported slow response times in loading images on the leading auction site. By 3:45, a number of users reported getting no information at all from the site.

One user in Maine wrote at about 3:50 that he couldn't access the home page.

"I wish eBay would knock it off with all their bells, whistles, and utterly useless features and concentrate on site stability," the user wrote.

eBay suffered three unplanned outages of more than three days from Sunday to Tuesday. The company said at the time that it had rebooted its own systems after noticing slow response times on them. Each time, eBay took more than an hour to get its systems back up and running again.

The latest downtimes follow an outage-plagued year for the leading online auction house. In June, the company suffered its biggest technical fiasco, a 22-hour outage that stretched over two days. See Story in Context
