Viewer's Choice Eyes NHL PPV
New York -- The National Hockey League and Viewer's Choice are close to a deal for cable pay-per-view distribution of the league's "NHL Center Ice" package, sources said Wednesday.

Offering up to 30 NHL games per week via PPV, the package has only been available to date on direct-broadcast satellite services. But the NHL has previously confirmed holding negotiations with Viewer's Choice about expanding that universe to include cable.

Sources said a deal could be announced this week -- possibly even Wednesday.

The "Center Ice" deal would be the second PPV package previously available exclusively on satellite to be offered to cable operators in recent months. In August, Viewer's Choice signed a multiyear deal with the National Basketball Association to offer its "NBA League Pass" subscription package to digital-cable subscribers.

Obtaining such out-of-market sports packages was a key reason why Viewer's Choice hired former DirecTV Inc. executive Rob Jacobson as senior vice president of distribution and product development in May.
