Hyundai to Develop 2nd-Generation 256Mb Synchronous DRAM
November 9, 1999 (SEOUL) -- Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. said on Nov. 8 that it has developed a second-generation 256Mb synchronous dynamic random access memory microchip.

The microchip maker said it employed inner MPS cylinder (IMC) technology in the project, which reduces the chip size by 40 percent.

"We are able to raise productivity, with the number of chips on a wafer rising by 70 percent," said an official of Hyundai Electronics, which recently absorbed Hyundai Microelectronics Co.

The prototype chip, which features 0.15-micron technology, will be made at the company's 0.18-micron 256M SDRAM production lines, the Hyundai unit said.

Mass production of the new chip will begin in the first quarter of 2000, an official said. He cited the company's goal to acquire a 20 percent share in the global SDRAM market.
