The Lanier business is important because it is a testimony to the wide range of applications for removable, non-volatile, digital storage.

I think it would be great to be able to dictate to a CF card, plug the card into a card reader and have it automatically transcribed with Dragon Systems Naturally Speaking. The raw voice text could be temporarily stored on a file server for off-line review until a hard copy is typed. Also, this software program is able to recognize the context of the dictation and then default to the most phonetically correct word using a database developed specifically for a given profession/specialty. This greatly reduces mistakes by eliminating "phononyms" (is that a word?). Additionally, in the field of medicine the requirements for documentation of service are increasingly complex and dictation costs are not insignificant. As a matter of fact, it was addressed as a matter of concern at our last executive meeting.

Maybe SanDisk will create an audio storage card based on the multilevel recording perfected by Invox. Voice quality is paramount in this type of application.

Betty - Thanks for the info on the Lanier dictation device. I looked at the web site you provided and was so intrigued that I asked Lanier to send me more info. If they are able to use this with voice recognition software, not only would it help doctors get their oral medical reports on paper, but it could also be used for court reporting, depositions, etc. Making the process digital instead of analog means that one can go directly from voice to text, without need for special transcribing costs. Thus, even if one of these devices costs upwards of $2,000 (unlikely), substantial savings could be realized in probably less than a year.

The key to the technology is the ability to store the voice data at low cost, with no moving parts, and lower power requirements, making possible a wide set of applications in place of older, labor intensive technology.
