Michael, here are my answers, more or less:

(1) Since the Lockeed products will have to first be developed and then be space and/or military qualified, don't look for any royalties soon -- probably two years or more, IMO. However, progress along the way would be apt to support stock value.

(2) I doubt that we can know unless ECD will release the information -- and I do not expect that.

(3) For space and military markets, does Intel get "Intel Inside" put on products? Seems unlikely to me -- and not much of a loss -- more important for consumer markets.

Here is what I am more interested in.

(a) Will we have rights to techniques and inventions that result from the joint effort? (Seems likely to me, but there may be some restrictions. This is something ECD might be willing to reveal.)

(b) How much will this joint effort speed up the development of consumer products? (ECD might be willing to reveal this, in a general way.)

(c) I any money forthcoming from Lockeed, or are we just getting use of their labs? (I would expect some up-front money, for the license, -- but maybe no salary for Tyler and others that might be on our staff.)

(d) Will this license and agreement help in obtaining others? (Seems probable to me that Lockeed's reputation will help to sanctify our tech -- sure hope so.)

ECD'S Director Ken Baker Selected As President and CEO of ERIM

November 05, 1999 13:04

TROY, Mich., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. ("ECD") (Nasdaq: ENER) Director Kenneth R. Baker has been selected to be President, CEO and a director of the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan ("ERIM"), one of the world's preeminent research institutes. Baker will continue to serve on ECD's Board of Directors and will be a consultant to ECD management on business and technical projects.

Stanford R. Ovshinsky, President and CEO of ECD, said, "Ken Baker's business, scientific and engineering capabilities make him an ideal candidate to head ERIM during this period of change. This is an opportunity he could not turn down. We are pleased that Ken will continue to be involved with us as a member of our Board and a consultant on selected projects."

ERIM is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the discovery, development and application of scientific knowledge for the benefit of society throughout the world. ERIM's purpose is to serve as an integrating force bringing together unique capabilities from academia, government and industry in the application of information management and technology. As a highly regarded company with a 50-year history, ERIM faces a restructuring and rebuilding of its organization as a result of the recent spin-off of ERIM International Operations.

"The opportunity to create and lead a new era in the rich history of one of the world's most prestigious research institutions is a compelling opportunity," Baker said, "and in many respects, my career has prepared me for this opportunity -- from building the high-performance GM electric vehicle team, to transforming GM Research and Development into an integrated global competitive asset, to my most recent experience as a high-technology entrepreneur working with Stan Ovshinsky, Bob Stempel and the entire ECD team."

The business strategy that the ECD management team has focused on over the last few years will continue to develop: namely, to build the inherent value of ECD by accelerating its enabling energy and information technologies into commercial market successes. ECD will continue to expand its five core commercial lines of business:

Energy Generation 1. Thin-Film Photovoltaics (United Solar)
Energy Storage 2. NiMH Batteries (Ovonic Battery/GM Ovonic)
3. Solid Hydride Storage of Hydrogen (Shell)
Information Technology 4. Phase-Change Optical Memory (Panasonic, Sony
and others)
5. Ovonic Unified Memory (Ovonyx/Lockheed Martin
and others)
Robert C. Stempel, Chairman of ECD, said, "We look forward to working with Ken in his new role at ERIM since ECD has developed many of the enabling technologies required for the future high-technology businesses. We wish Ken well as he pursues this new opportunity while continuing his relationship with ECD."

ECD is a leader in the synthesis of new materials and the development of advanced production technology and innovative products. It has pioneered and developed enabling technologies leading to new products and production processes based on amorphous, disordered and related materials, with an emphasis on alternative energy and advanced information technologies.
