MICROSOFT CORP's Venus project is on track and the first "set-top" boxes using the system should be in Chinese homes before the end of this year, a senior Microsoft official said on Thursday. Venus -- which Microsoft has billed as a cheap alternative to a personal computer -- is a slimmed down operating system which is incorporated into a set-top box or video compact disc player that can be hooked up to a television to allow Web browsing. "Some time in December you'll see boxes that will be available in the retail channels," said Michael Rawding, the company's regional director for greater China.
