Good analysis of SDLI on Yahoo thread..............fashionable photons by: LaserPope 11/4/1999 5:33 pm EST Msg: 920 of 921 SDLI has been making semiconductor lasers far longer than JDSU, and they have lots of patents in the area. Their high power 980nm pump reliability is such that they have become Alcatel's sole supplier in the undersea market. Apparently, SDLI even sells to JDSU. SDLI's top management is very solid, but they lack the PR flash of JDSU's. Hey, they're serious science guys--they didn't come from the investor relations dept at Bre-X. Until a few years ago, the active components part of JDSU, Uniphase (UNPH), was primarily a gas lasers company (that is, 60's and 70's technology). I think many people in the lasers and optics field remember the old UNPH, and have an out-of-date bias. However, over the last several years, UNPH's management astutely bought up (mainly through acquisitons) all the semiconductor laser expertise (and some patents) they needed to become a significant competitor to SDLI. The recent merger with JDS to form JDSU, as you probably know, has resulted in even more oomph, since they can now put together integrated modules with active and passive components. Bottom line is that you should probably buy both: SDLI has the edge in the 980nm pump market, with other wavelengths to come, but JDSU has the edge in supplying integrated components. The overall demand out there is insatiable, so there's plenty of market to go around. As for what's the better value for the stock price? You should use anyone who claims to know as a contrary indicator for future stock trades. By the way, a number of posts here and elsewhere have compared the SDLI/JDSU relationship to AMD/INTC. Not a chance. Posted as a reply to: Msg 918 by pimpingstock
