Tight security for Pope's visit

HT Correspondent (New Delhi, November 4)

The Delhi Police have made very elaborate arrangements for the visit of Pope John Paul II. Commissioner of Police Ajai Raj Sharma, when contacted, said, "We have been given to understand that the demonstrators, who have gathered in the Capital, do not want to obstruct the Pope's visit. They have said that they are merely trying to educate the people, stating that they will not tolerate conversion."

Even their banner read, "We are against conversion but we welcome the Pope," added Mr Sharma.

Asked about the number of people coming from outside the Capital, Mr Sharma said that though the police did not have any exact figures, the number may not be very high. "The influx has been going for the last four to five days. People are coming in small groups, 10-15 at a time, mostly members of various organisation, to demonstrate here. We are keeping a watch on these persons," said Mr Sharma. He further stated that though the police had not sealed the border, they were keeping a close watch on the people coming in and the neighbouring states had also been alerted.

"The neighbouring states have been told to inform us about the people coming to the Capital and also for intelligence about any group which intends to cause mischief," he added. Seven Shiv Sainiks were placed under preventive arrests yesterday and the day before. But no preventive arrests were made today.

Mr Sharma stated that the Pope would be given the security cover given to the Head of a State. "Delhi Police would be responsible for Pope's security while he is here. All arrangements are being made and the police are on the alert.
