**OT***RE: LAWYERS. If the lawyers intention is to "help" the disabled by forcing AOL into speeding up their efforts to accommodate the blind through some sort of text-to-voice technology, then they should take the case "pro bono" (FREE)and the settlement should not involve any type of monetary penalty to AOL. The problem with 99% of torte lawyers is that they do not seek the "truth" in a case or to make society better as a result of a lawsuit. They are interested in WINNING (and WINNING does not always correspond to finding the TRUTH in a case) and collecting HUGE SUMS OF MONEY for themselves and making a NAME for themselves and their firms. Our country is increasingly being held hostage by lawsuits that have little or no merit. Many of the issues brought up in these suits could be and should be solved without penalizing the defendants with OBSCENE cash penalties, which only serve to penalize YOU AND ME due to the fact that these penalties ultimately get passed on to the customers. As much as the many new ADA laws try to FORCE companies (sometimes to the point of bankruptcy) to accommodate ANY and ALL disability, sometimes there are situations where disabled individuals are UNFORTUNATELY not able to enjoy the same "access" to CERTAIN things in life that people without disabilities enjoy. While this is truly sad, all the lawsuits in the world will not change this fact. And certainly all of the HUGE PILES OF CASH that the torte lawyers receive for their greedy efforts will not change this fact either. Not that this is their motivation anyway. Our society has become a collection of ZOMBIES who belive, being "conditioned" by the prevalence of these often frivolous suits, that they do not need to practice COMMON SENSE or RESPONSIBILITY for their actions. It is always someone else's fault. And somehow it is only someone else's fault ONLY WHEN THE ACCUSED CAN AFFORD TO PAY HUGE CASH PENALTIES. What comes next? A lawsuit against General Motors because all cars should somehow be equipped so that the blind can drive? Do we sue McDonalds and Ben & Jerry's because they are "allowing" the severely obese to slowly kill themselves by consuming mass quantities of food? Should we FORCE them to come up with fat-free hamburgers and fries? WHERE DOES IT END ? ? ? I DO NOT MEAN TO SOUND OFFENSIVE. This is not meant as a sarcastic comment, rather a sobering example of how we as a society have allowed these suits to replace common our sense. Soon we will not be able to leave our homes for fear of LOOKING AT SOMEONE THE WRONG WAY OR SAYING SOMETHING THAT OFFENDS SOMEONE. *****As a disclaimer, I would like to state that I have a close family member who is disabled with CP. But I am wise enough to know that all of the lawsuits and money in the world won't change this fact nor will it make her able to do things that most people can do. And I do not expect every corporation in the world to go beyond REASONABLE measures to accommodate her disability. So OSHANL, whoever you are, MAYBE YOU SHOULD THINK BEFORE YOU TALK. -Steve
