JHR,
Kroger buying Winn Dixie is a new news for me. Winn Dixie is not only in the south but they own other stores like Thriftway which operate in the midwest as well. That simply is greater potential for U-Scan. I don't know if Albertson has any plan to install auto checkout machines but if they do their homework they would end up with U-Scan anyway.

As to Walmart - so far only the Arkansas "HQ" stores have them on a trial basis. And they have had it for at least 1 year if not two. There were issues concerning interfacing and service but definitely not theft. This is one non-existent issue that have been discussed to death across all forums. Simply, three things: 1) there is always an attendent assigned to watch over 4 machines; 2) there is a security camera on the machine; 3) one has to place items scanned on a weight for the machine to verify items with weight before it allows one to go to the next item. If something is not done right, the attendent's button will be flashed. Afterall, the best way for theft is to walk straight out the door with the merchandize in the pocket. Why bother to fake checkout?
