I once got in trouble for using the word "strumpet", in 8th grade. I had been reading "Brave New World". John Savage reacts in horror when the woman he loves comes on to him like a whore, hits her, drives her off, and starts repeating the mantra "Impudent strumpet", which he has gotten from his extensive reading of Shakespeare. I was so taken with the phrase that I used it with a girl whom I knew to be sexually active, counting on her ignorance. Unfortunately, my social studies teacher heard me say it, and was not ignorant enough. He forced me to explain what it meant, which caused some consternation......
