Duke, RE: The spot price of the DIMMs (PC100), which had soared in the aftermath of the quake, began to decline as well, and fell below the pre-quake level on Oct. 15.

Hmmm. DELL issued their warning on 18 Oct, after prices had declined below pre-quake levels. What makes it even stranger is that DELL stated that the price increase was a very recent phenomena.

Somethin's going on in Austin.

Dell buys its DRAM via contracts, not on the spot market. Although, the spot price dropped back again after the quake, the contract price continued going up and remains relatively high to this day. Contract prices were approximately $6/64Mb PC100 SDRAM chip at the beginning of Dell's fiscal quarter and are now around $11/64Mb chip.
