In 1940Richard Gluks, SS Oberfuhrer, Commander of all the Concnertation camps sent SS-SturmbannfuhrerWalter Eisflied to Oswicem, on the foot hills of Carpatians, and in German occupie Poland. They choose the site which was very isolated, swampy, mosquito ridden and well protedcted by the by trees. Riechfuhrer Himler approved the project to build a quarantine camp there. The camp was projected to keep 10,000 priosners, and Wermacht had a claim on it, bu the SS took the control. SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Rudolf Hoss was the brain behind building the camp. To start the work 30 German criminals from Sachsenshausen were transfered there, and but in Block 1. They were given numbers 1 to 30 and they became assitants of the SS. They followed by the AussenKommando who were brought to become KPO. Mostly from Lodz. They had no contact with civilians working in the zone. There were 47 subcamps in Auschwitz, Auschwitz-Birkenau, and Auschwitz-Monowitz. These camps covered over 40 square kilometers. Here are a few names for you: Aldorf, Althammer Eintrachthutte, Chelemek. Babitz, Birkenau, Gleiwitz 1, 2, 3, and 4, Kobior,Trezebinia, Plaway, and off course Mononwitz(Buna), etc.
