GARTNERGROUP'S DATAQUEST SAYS MEXICO DRIVES LATIN AMERICAN PC
11/5/99 8:17

Market to 40 Percent Growth in Third Quarter; Compaq
Grew Twice as Fast as the Industry Average

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1999--Third quarter
personal computer shipments in Mexico increased 87 percent over the
same period last year, driving Latin American PC shipments to 40
percent growth in the third quarter of this year, according to
Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NYSE:IT).
Latin American PC shipments approached 1.3 million units in the
third quarter, and Mexico, with shipments surpassing 433,000 units,
accounted for 34 percent of overall shipments in the region.
"Within the process of a rapid adoption of technology and renewal
of the installed PC base, the development of a nontraditional
distribution channel in Mexico is definitely increasing sales of
computers, particularly in the consumer market," said Luis Anavitarte,
senior industry analyst for Dataquest's Personal Computer Quarterly
Statistics Latin America program.
"The Telmex-Prodigy Internet Plus deal, with Acer, Compaq, and
Apple, where consumers can get a PC and Internet access by making
monthly payments via their telephone bill, is working well for vendors
and end users. This concept should be applied in other Latin American
countries."
Compaq experienced the strongest growth among the top-tier
vendors, as its shipments increased 84 percent over the third quarter
of last year (see Table 1). Acer moved into the No. 2 position because
of its strong performance in the Mexican market.
