Manhattan Scientifics to Acquire Los Alamos Labs' Ultra-Efficient Water Filter Technology for Consumer Use

Manhattan Scientifics to Acquire Los Alamos Labs' Ultra-Efficient Water
Filter Technology for Consumer Use

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Sep 15, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

New Nanoporous Polymer Molecular Filter Capable of
Removing Carcinogens from Drinking Water

Manhattan Scientifics, Inc. (OTC BB: MHTX) announced today that it
has acquired an exclusive option to license the worldwide consumer
rights to an ultra-efficient nanoporous polymer water filtering
technology developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
Manhattan Scientifics intends to participate with a major industrial
corporation in a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA)
with the Los Alamos National Laboratory to complete the
commercialization of this technology and its future applications and
products.

The technology has the ability to reduce concentrations of organic
compounds in water to parts-per-trillion levels. As a comparison, the
binding between organic contaminants and the nanoporous polymer is 100,
000 times greater than the binding between contaminants and the widely
used activated carbon filters. Accordingly, in lab experiments a filter
constructed of this "Nano sponge" will trap many carcinogens, which are
not normally filtered with carbon products. Unlike activated carbon,
the polymers do not allow leaching of the organic contaminants once
they are trapped. However, a simple alcohol rinse will release organic
contaminants from the polymer allowing the filter material to be used
time and time again.

Marvin Maslow, chief executive officer of Manhattan Scientifics, said,
"Many consumers now pay more for bottled water in the supermarket than
they pay for gasoline. Our intention is to reverse this trend by
bringing a low cost, re-usable water filtering device to the market and
to bring pure drinking water costs back to a real-world alignment. The
advantages over existing filtration devices for the consumer and
restaurant markets are significant. We are hopeful that we, together
with our intended "development partner" will enable us to work together
to design consumer applications utilizing these cyclodextrin polymer
separation materials. We plan to follow with active consumer product
introductions."

Maslow said, "These arrangements with LANL represent our fourth major
technology initiative. We are confident we can successfully shepherd
these diverse undertakings because of the business model that we have
developed. The model is based on establishing strategic alliances with
scientists and technical experts together with corporate partners who
have the ability to provide the capital, manufacturing and marketing to
transform these technology initiatives into successful and profitable
businesses. The technologies that Manhattan Scientifics chooses to
adopt and eventually commercialize must be proprietary, unique, have
the potential for significant breakthrough and have significant global
profit implications."

Manhattan Scientifics option to license the technology is renewable for
one year following the initial six-month option period. The option
periods will allow time to pursue product exploration and partnering
opportunities. If the studies measure up to required standards,
Manhattan Scientifics intends to exercise its option to secure full
exclusive license from the Los Alamos Laboratory.

Cindy Boone, a spokesperson for LANL, said, "Our decision to offer the
exclusive option covering consumer applications of the nanoporous
polymer technology to Manhattan Scientifics was based upon our
assessment of the management level of aggressiveness in pursuing market
opportunities. Within the past year we watched this Los Alamos-based
high tech group enter into the fuel cell arena and participate in two
cooperative research and development agreements with LANL, one
dedicated to developing the long sought-after media for holographic
data storage and the other in portable fuel cell energy for consumers
area."

The goal of the CRADA is to improve and investigate cyclodextrin
polymer separation materials in both liquid and gas applications. If
successful, Manhattan Scientifics anticipates development of several
new product lines based on licensing the LANL patents. i.e. home water
filtering to provide the consumer with ultra-pure drinking water and
possible elimination of swimming pool chemicals. The filtering aspects
concerning "gas" will lead to exploration of NanoSponge filters and
their potential to eliminate indoor pollutants as well as to filter
smoke and odors from restaurants, offices and homes.

Manhattan Scientifics, Inc. develops and commercializes proprietary
technologies to advance consumer and commercial electronics. These
include micro fuel cell technology for portable electronic devices,
holographic media for data storage, and Internet-based image management
systems. Its research headquarters are in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and
its business offices are located in New York City. Copies of Manhattan

The foregoing press release contains forward-looking statements,
including statements regarding the company's expectation of its future
business. These forward looking statements are based largely on the
company's expectations and are subject to a number of risks and
uncertainties, such as successfully completing the research and
development with respect to the micro fuel cell and other technologies,
successfully commercializing the micro fuel cell and holographic
storage devices for mass production, successfully protecting the
company's patents, and effective significant industry competition from
various entities whose research and development, financial, sales and
marketing and other capabilities far exceeds the company's. In light of
these risks and uncertainties there can be no assurances that the
forward-looking statements in this press release will in fact transpire
or prove to be accurate.

I just heard that someone just told me that THE PILE I took a picture of..is NOT the Hassey Ore Pile...this is the gate I talked to Palmer and Skinner at in May 1998 and this is the HOP that they said was such then....anyone else been there? Also, Dennis asked me not to post these pictures at one time when I sent them to him when Tin was talking Water Permits and such...THEY LET us down, I let myself and you DOWN, so sorry:
