Thanks Jim! It's good to see that Globalstar is seeking 'high end users' rather than the masses. There are obviously not enough handsets, so those must go to the highest bidder, which will be the ones who most need and can afford minutes in bulk.

I suppose the best marketing strategy would be to sell the handset for $300 and an all-you-can-eat minutes deal for $500 per month. That would encourage minutes use, even in competition with terrestrial, ensure the handsets all went to high volume users who would pay heaps. Globalstar LP should offer such bulk minute deals to Service Providers for the first 3 years until the minutes are all being used.

The gateways couldn't be all done simultaneously and neither would that be economic anyway, so there was always going to be a soft rollout in that sense. But what we are really getting here is a DELAYED rollout. It was not ready in September because gateways, FBI, handsets, salespeople, Web sales, etc were not ready. Indeed, the satellites were not really ready either, with 4 still on the ground.

Bernie lost his bet [if I've got the terms of the bet right]. He owes a dinner. But he has done extremely well, nevertheless to get this monster up and running, with a little help from Mighty Q! and others.

IT will be eternally grateful. Me too.

Meanwhile, I can't find the MOU graph at globalstar.com
There are minutes being used, so where's the data?!! Shareholders want to know. Maybe the SEC has them or would invite Globalstar to tell us to avoid any untoward insider trading.

It will be interesting to see if GLP gets any revenues from the Gateway operators during this period of beta testing. It may be, that once GLP and the GW oprtr agree the system meets certain specs, that GLP gets paid even if the retail user is a freebie beta tester. There has to be some mechanism to motivate the GW oprtr to actually start charging users, after all.

At one time I had the impression that GWs would pay GLP a certain monthly connection fee irrespective of actual revenue use on the system through their gateway. I'm not sure if that's true, but it would make sense. GLP and the GWs could have an arrangement similar to most cell phone services, only on a macro scale: e.g., GW pays GLP 1M$ per month and gets the first 2M call minutes free.
