Your example companies (APPL, AOL/NSCP) have failed to provide the "quality competition" that would really make Gates sweat... ...ORCL is another matter. ORCL is not what I would call "inept competition", and if you look at who owns the DB market, you'll see that good solid competition has made MSFT follow, rather than lead in this sector.
