I agree that the most interesting portion of this Silicon Valley soap opera will be the penalty phase. To fine MSFT in a manner that would hurt them is difficult, due to their large cash reserves. To limit their business practices at this point is also about a day late and a dollar short. Netscape has already been absorbed by AOL, Andresson has a new venture and the majority of the world's consumer and corporate desktops run a MSFT operating system.
In the most drastic possible outcome, MSFT would be divided into individual companies allowed to concentrate their focus on a particular market segment ala AT&T. Not such a bad outcome for the people in the Lucent division.
It would probably be best for MSFT to take a less than aggressive stance toward this verdict, although that has not typically been the Gates modus operandi. Some temporary pain and suffering for sure but even a the US government cannot undo what MSFT has accomplished in the last five years. Tune in for tomorrow's episode.....
