Because our government officials have tasted the sweet taste of success in litigation. Tobacco (done deal), guns (probably a great settlement coming), lead paint in Rhode Island. I don't think that they are going to give an inch. They are cocky sons of a bitches and have joined the private sector in massive lawsuits.

Consumers were hurt? Bullshit.

The DOJ/States probably know they got a lot more than they had planned prior the start of the case. Why take chances with trying something radical and mess up America's dominance of the computer industry.

I wish that were true--that there was deep down rationality about the benefits to this country of MSFT, of innovation and gorilla-hold on technology in every possible sector. But I fear it's not. Personal greed, hatred, etc, take over.
