OT MSFT the establishment of standards
Microsoft standards only appeared after they were dominant. It was trade secrets which knocked Borland, Corel, and OS2 off the charts. Information on these "standards" was very hard to come by. Even today you can't get decent information unless you attend the Microsoft certification courses where most of the useful information is not in the manuals.

I'd love to see the applications separated from the OS. The government could offer a bounty (by letting you sue) if any Microsoft applications were found using an interface to the Microsoft OS that wasn't publicly documented. Then software would really begin to develop at internet speed and there would be a lot of opportunities to invest in products we haven't even heard of yet.
