Yes releasing the darpa research to the free market and letting it run - I agree - wonderful - but look at our history and see what happens when regulation comes in - long term it can be manipulated for evil - you can only fight free market systems for so long before things collapse and we are worse off than when we started.

Maybe to some degree. But it was the government's DOD-DARPA program that developed the internet protocol. The unleashing of this technology into the "free enterprise" world has been the real exciting part. Imagine how long it would take if only one company was in control of innovation for the internet? =;-)

And do you remember how the Internet was only used for email, ftp, and gopher before the government got out of the way and removed the ban on using the Internet for commercial purposes?
