We could go into theory and technical discussions for days. But if there is anything I've learned over the years it's to not over look the obvious. With your 1990 Accord one of the first places I'd check is the distributor. They have a habit of self destructing due to distributor shaft and bushing wear. This can affect timing settings. You may be able to hear a rattling or scraping sound from the distributor as you raise and lower the engine rpm while listening under the hood. If you are able to remove the distributor cap (this is a bit tricky for the mechanically challenged), look for brown rusty powder residue and looseness of the rotor when pushed side to side.
