As it took Nixon to go to China (a liberal couldn't have
gone without getting red-baiting flak) it took Jobs to
return to Apple to strike the deal that would release
MacOffice 97.
fact

was withheld and its cancellation threatened in order
to get the Apple concessions. MS had the pen to sign
Apple's death warrant, and mad highly credible threats
to use it in order to get compliance.
