Aljorma: A company is brains and management. MSFT could sell the O/S to bidders and still kick their butts. You have to have the vision and the ability to apply this to lines of code. To do that you first have to digest the code. On the other hand if the code is such bloatware as so many describe it who would want it. If they break MSFT up how will they divide it? By geography ala the Bells and Standard Oil. By function ala no one that I can think of. Where is the precedent for this crap? Even if they do split the company up who is going to compete wit them. MSFT will still produce the most popular version of Windows and their applications company will have the old legacies and the internet company will still have the vision of MSFT. You will say that the government should continually oversee MSFT to make sure that there is no collusion and on and on ad nauseum.

Government control isn't the answer. Someone has to spend the time and money to develop a better mousetrap. IBM had the opportunity but QUIT! AAPL had the opportunity but chose to be a niche player having the hardware and software all to themselves just as SUNW plays the game.
